more about our cob oven project
Building and Baking in a Backyard Cob Oven
Muliti-week series, every Sunday, June 14 – October 25, 2009 noon – 2 pm
On Sunday, June 14th, the Meadowbrook Farmer's Market began a multi-week series teaching people how to build and use their own traditional cob oven! A low-cost to no-cost project that can increase the year round use and enjoyment of your outside home environment.
This hands on education event will show you how to find most building materials for free and sometimes in your own backyard! The first week will set the foundation in place for the heat retaining hearth followed by several weeks of cob mixing and oven forming. Once complete, the oven will be used to demonstrate a variety of cooking uses at the market and even be used to bake bread for the school community where it will be constructed.
Cob is an alternative sustainable building technology that has been in use for thousands of years around the world. A cob oven is a primitive cooking device made from a mixture of clay, sand and straw and uses the insulating qualities of this earthen mixture to retain the heat of a fire that is built inside of it. The oven itself is so well insulated that it is only warm to the touch from the outside. These ovens are used to bake mouth watering pizzas and breads along with just about everything else!
Working with cob is a useful skill and a memorable lifetime experience that brings family and friends together in a unique and productive way!
